Verizon will switch off its 3G network next year

Verizon will shut down its 3G services on December 31st, 2022, VP of network engineering Mike Haberman announced today. According to Haberman, less than 1 percent of Verizon customers still access the 3G network, with 99 percent on 4G LTE or 5G. Verizon has roughly 94 million customers, so by the company's own math, as many as 940,000 people are still using Verizon's 3G network.

The US operator had already delayed plans to pull the plug at the end of 2019 in order to give affected customers an opportunity to make plans to move to a more modern handset.

Decommissioning its 3G network would free up valuable spectrum that could help improve its nationwide 5G. Verizon currently uses 850 and 1900 MHz spectrum for its 3G, both of which could help its 5G rollout. Verizon, in particular, has a shortage of available low-band spectrum to use for its nationwide 5G network, since its 700 MHz spectrum is tied up with its 4G network.

Verizon notes that the shutdown comes months after its competitors. T-Mobile and AT&T are both reportedly shutting down their 3G networks in early 2022.
