T-Mobile completes purchase of Layer3 TV

T-Mobile U.S. said Tuesday (January 23) it has closed its acquisition of Layer3 TV, the Denver-based MVPD that has already launched pay TV services in a handful of U.S. markets.

Nearly 200 Layer3 TV employees will be joining T-Mobile, including several executives. Layer3 CEO Jeff Binder will become an Executive Vice President and member of the Senior Leadership Team in addition to leading T-Mobile's TV team.

Now that the deal is complete, T-Mobile will soon show Layer3 TV's existing product in some of its stores. Layer3 TV will be available for demo and purchase in select T-Mobile stores in Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. in the coming weeks.

T-Mobile's pay TV service will launch in 2018. It'll combine traditional TV channels with online video in a single UI, and demo videos have show that it'll also offer DVR functionality. The service has also been shown to run on televisions as well as mobile devices like phones and tablets.
