At an anticipated event in San Francisco today, Apple unveiled the new iPhone 5 - thinner, taller and faster.

The new iPhone 5 has the same retina display as on its predecessor. It features a larger screen and weighs 112 grams, which is 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S. It is also 18% thinner, Apple's marketing chief Phil Schiller said. It has an improved A6 processor that is twice as fast as its predecessor and a widescreen aspect ratio.

The iPhone 5 is also the first Apple smartphone to have 4G-LTE network connectivity, which allows for speeds of up to 10 times faster than 3G, or about the same as the average home broadband connection. In the United States, the iPhone 5 will be compatible with the LTE networks supported by Verizon, AT&T and Sprint.

The new smartphone features an improved "iSight" camera. It is 25 percent smaller than the iPhone 4S shooter, yet it can snap pictures 40 percent faster. Apple also says that the five-element, f/2.4 lens now uses a sapphire crystal that is thinner and more durable than glass.

The iPhone 5 will go on sale on Sept. 21, starting at $199 for the 16-gigabyte version with a new two-year contract. Larger 32 GB and 64 GB versions will cost $299 and $399, respectively. Apple will begin taking pre- orders on Sept. 14.
