The first Amazon Fresh grocery store, located in Los Angeles' Woodland Hills neighborhood, will open its doors this week to customers invited from the local area, the company announced Thursday. The store will open to the broader public in the coming weeks. Amazon has three other Fresh store locations, including in Irvine and Northridge, California, as well as Chicago's Naperville neighborhood, all of which are being used for online order fulfillment.

The store will sell food like pizzas and sandwiches that are prepared on site, as well as a range of items from national and local brands. It's intended as a cheaper alternative to Amazon's Whole Foods stores.

At Amazon's newest grocery store, you can ask Alexa voice assistants where to find milk, scan and check out your groceries using your shopping cart, and pick up books you ordered off the e-commerce giant's website.

"When customers arrive in store, they can access their Alexa shopping list through the Amazon app or on the Amazon Dash Cart, enabling them to quickly navigate aisles and check off items as they shop," Jeff Helbling, Amazon's vice-president of the Fresh Stores explained. "Throughout the store we have Amazon Echo Show devices available to ask Alexa for help—simply say, 'Alexa, where can I find the hot sauce.'"

Customers can enter the store the traditional way, but if they want to use the cart, they need to open up their Amazon app and swipe it. The shopping cart uses "a combination of computer vision algorithms and sensor fusion," within the cart to identify and tally up the items. That way users can skip the checkout line. The store will include regular checkout lanes, too.
